Will your wardrobe drawers open behind sliding doors?

A drawer tower can fit inside a wardrobe and still be difficult to use. The important check is whether the drawer can travel through the opening left by the sliding doors and surrounding walls.

Consider the drawer tower and door position together; confirm clearances using your actual dimensions.

The cavity width is not the clear opening

The full width inside a wardrobe tells you how much room is available for storage. It does not tell you how much of that storage is accessible at one time. Sliding doors overlap, and a door moved to one side still occupies part of the opening.

Start with a simple plan showing the side walls, each door and the proposed drawer tower. Check the clear opening with the doors moved into the position you will use to reach the drawers. Do not assume that half the wardrobe width is automatically available on a two-door arrangement.

Look for walls that return across the opening

Some built-in wardrobes have short wall returns at the sides, often called nib walls. Storage behind these returns may fit comfortably, but a drawer front can strike the wall as it opens.

A tower may need to sit away from the wall, with an infill finishing the gap. That changes the usable layout. Record the return and share a photo when checking your kit, rather than pushing the tower against the side wall on a sketch and assuming it will work. The required clearance depends on the actual opening and selected components.

Check the whole drawer movement

Consider more than the drawer front at rest. Check its movement past the door edge, frame and side return, and allow space for the person using it. A room can look generous with everything closed and feel tight once a drawer is extended.

In a walk-in wardrobe, perform the same check against opposite storage. Drawers on both sides of a narrow aisle need careful planning. Test your proposed layout with a floor sketch or removable tape, using confirmed product dimensions rather than estimating from a photograph.

Resolve the layout before ordering the kit

Choose the door arrangement and internal storage together. If access is restricted, moving the drawer tower may be a better solution than changing the whole door design. Open shelves or hanging space may suit a less accessible section, but they still need to be comfortably reachable.

Send the opening measurements, side-return details and intended door arrangement when asking for a layout check. Use the product-specific measuring and installation instructions for final ordering; this checklist helps identify the questions to resolve first.

  • Record the cavity and the visible opening separately.
  • Show side returns, skirting and other obstructions.
  • Check the clear gap with doors in their usable positions.
  • Confirm drawer travel and space to stand.
  • Review tower placement before confirming dimensions.
